Telehealth AI Scribes for Behavioral Health

Two capture models

Some scribes provide their own telehealth room (Upheal). Others attach to your existing telehealth platform via a bot, browser extension, or platform integration (Blueprint, Twofold, Mentalyc). Both are valid; the second is easier to adopt if you already have a telehealth stack you like.

The BAA chain

Every party in the audio path handles PHI. Any weak link breaks the chain.

  1. Your telehealth vendor needs a BAA (Zoom for Healthcare, Google Workspace with BAA, Doxy.me).
  2. Your scribe needs a BAA on the plan you're purchasing.
  3. The scribe's transcription and model subprocessors must all be under BAA with the scribe.
  4. Get the full chain confirmed in writing before real client sessions.

Platform-specific notes

Some combinations work better than others.

  • Zoom for Healthcare: broadest scribe support; Blueprint, Twofold, Mentalyc, and Upheal all capture cleanly.
  • Google Meet: supported by most scribes via bot; verify the meet-bot's BAA coverage.
  • Doxy.me: browser-extension capture from Blueprint and Twofold; test end-to-end.
  • SimplePractice Telehealth: limited direct integrations; browser-tab audio capture is the fallback.

Telehealth vs. in-person note quality

In our 2026 testing, telehealth notes are on average slightly better than in-person notes because the audio is cleaner and the client is closer to the microphone. The tradeoff is that non-verbal cues (posture, tearfulness, agitation) that a clinician catches in the room are absent from audio and therefore absent from the note. Expect to add more clinician observation to the MSE section for telehealth notes.

Frequently asked questions

Which AI scribe is best for telehealth therapy?
Upheal is the strongest option if you want a native HIPAA-eligible telehealth room. Blueprint, Twofold, or Mentalyc are the strongest options if you already have Zoom for Healthcare or Google Meet and want to keep it. Twofold is our Editor's Pick overall; Upheal edges it for telehealth-first practices.
Is Zoom HIPAA compliant for AI scribes?
Only Zoom for Healthcare (with a signed BAA from Zoom) is HIPAA-eligible for capturing therapy sessions. The consumer Zoom tier is not, regardless of what any scribe promises.
Do AI scribes work with Doxy.me?
Blueprint and Twofold capture Doxy.me sessions via a browser extension; the scribe records the tab audio. Confirm the extension is running before every session and that both vendors' BAAs are in place.
